The Dent Employees’ Association (DEA) is a forward-thinking labour union founded to bring construction and allied workers together in pursuit of fairness, respect, and collective strength in the workplace. Officially constituted on October 18, 2018, DEA is grounded in the belief that workers thrive when they are empowered to shape the conditions of their employment — not in conflict with employers, but in partnership with them.
From the Dent Employees’ Association to a Broader Vision
The story of the Dent Employees' Association, a group formed by workers at Jim Dent Construction Ltd. to advocate for improved working conditions and a unified voice. As the needs and aspirations of members expanded beyond a single employer, so too did the vision. The Association evolved to embrace a wider mandate — one that could include construction and allied workers across British Columbia — and with that, a new identity was born on Dec 15, 2022: United Workforce Group of BC (UWGBC). The name reflects a deeper commitment to solidarity, inclusiveness, and collective representation across the industry. The broader vision allowed for unique partnerships with other Unions for access to work and labour.
Purpose: Organizing with a Collaborative Spirit
At its core, the UWGBC exists to organize workers to advance their interests in the industry through collective bargaining and mutual aid, while also maintaining constructive, solutions-oriented relationships with employers. This approach recognizes that workers’ well-being and company success are interdependent — and that collaboration often yields the strongest outcomes.
Local Autonomy Within a United Framework
As UWGBC has grown, it has embraced a model of local autonomy, allowing groups of workers — such as those at Jim Dent Construction Ltd. — to form their own local committees within the broader union structure. These Locals, such as the newly envisioned “Dent Employees’ Association – UWGBC,” are empowered to make decisions that directly affect their members, including negotiating collective agreements, managing grievances, and handling day-to-day representation.
This structure ensures that members retain a strong voice in matters closest to their workplaces, while also benefiting from the strength, resources, and legitimacy of the province-wide union. The UWGBC remains the recognized legal bargaining agent under BC’s labour laws, but Locals now have the tools and authority to lead with responsiveness and autonomy at the ground level, such as the Dent Employees’ Association. The Union brands these locals as their own autonomous employees’ association to govern their own finances and decision making with their own leadership committee.
At the Dent Employees’ Association (DEA), we are more than just a union — we are a reliable partner in your working life. We provide a comprehensive range of services designed to support you at every stage of your career, from your first day on the job to retirement.
🔹 Collective Bargaining & Advocacy
We negotiate collective agreements that protect and enhance your wages, benefits, working conditions, and job security. Through collective bargaining, we ensure that your voice is amplified and that your needs are prioritized in discussions with employers. Whether it’s a question of fair pay, safety protocols, or scheduling, your interests are our mandate.
🔹 Representation & Support
If you are facing a disciplinary issue or employment dispute, you are not alone. DEA provides confidential, experienced representation to ensure that your rights are respected and due process is followed. Our representatives are here to advocate for you, guide you through procedures, and work toward fair outcomes.
🔹 Benefits Support
Understanding your employment benefits can be confusing. That’s why we offer support with benefits questions, helping members navigate their entitlements — including health, dental, vacation, and leave policies — as outlined in the collective agreement.
🔹 Training & Professional Development
We know that keeping up with industry standards and certifications is essential. DEA in partnership with the Construction Industry Training Network of the ICBA helps identify training needs and can assist in accessing programs that boost your qualifications, safety knowledge, and career growth. Our goal is to empower you with the tools and credentials you need to succeed.
🔹 Retirement Planning
Looking ahead to the future? Workers get access to Registered Savings Plan (RSP) contributions through the Employer sponsor RSP plan. This retirement benefit helps members build long-term financial security, making it easier to plan for a comfortable and stable retirement.
